I stumbled onto this video that I think is very informative when it comes to exposing outdoor scenes correctly and what a good Director/Cinematographer should take into account when making decisions.
You should always err to underexpose rather than overexpose, especially when you’re outdoors. However, if you underexpose too much and you have a super-bright light source in the scene, your footage will end up grainy when you try to bring it up and even in post.
Many believe that color correction is the easy way to fix an improperly exposed scene. As the video reveals, that just isn’t the case.
With light, every decision is paramount.
